Luigi Gambarotta is Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Genova. His fields of research include mechanics of materials, damage and fracture mechanics, mechanics of masonry structures and computational mechanics. He has worked extensively on constitutive modelling of brittle and frictional materials under repeated loading and on computational modelling of masonry structures under seismic actions. Chairman of the research project on Seismic Analysis of Masonry Structures in Historical Centres of the National Group for the Defence from Earthquakes GNDT (1997-2000). Chairman of the conference on Masonry Mechanics (Messina, 1996). He is member of the RILEM Technical Committee Computer Modelling of Mechanical Behaviour of Masonry Structures.
