The Masters degree from the ROSE School is jointly awarded by the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS) and the Università degli Studi di Pavia.
Graduate students involved in the ROSE Masters programme have the possibility of following 18-month MSc programmes on Earthquake Engineering, Engineering Seismology or Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology.
If following the Earthquake Engineering option, students will acquire the ability to undertake seismic design of new structures and the assessment and strengthening of existing structures. Students following the Engineering Seismology option will acquire the ability to design, execute and evaluate assessments of seismic hazard for site-specific engineering projects, for earthquake loss assessments, and for emergency planning scenarios. The combined option of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology will enable students to acquire technical competence in both areas.
The Masters degrees at the ROSE School require a minimum of 90 credits to be obtained, with no more than one dissertation. This effectively means that the student must earn at least 60 credits through courses and 30 credits through a master thesis.
For the Master degree in Earthquake Engineering the student needs to earn at least 60 credits related to Earthquake Engineering subjects, including the master thesis. For the Master degree in Engineering Seismology the student needs to earn at least 60 credits related to Engineering Seismology subjects, including the master thesis. For the Master degree in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology students are required to acquire, through attendance of taught modules and the carrying out of a master thesis, of at least 42 credits on each of the two Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology components.
The typical organization of the study consists in two semesters where the student follows courses earning 30 credits per semester. Afterwards, the third semester is devoted to the production of the master thesis of technically high standards for which 30 credits are awarded. The thesis can be produced either through original research work or through a professional internship.
The courses that have been offered at the School to date and upcoming courses for the next academic year can be viewed on the Taught Modules page, which the lecturers of the School are available on the Teaching Body page.
