Seismic vulnerability assessment of a hospital building

ABSTRACT

The present work deals with seismic vulnerability assessment of an important existing reinforced concrete building of public interest – a hospital – situated in Emilia Romagna, Italy.

Starting from the information obtained from the original drawings and in situ tests results, the procedure proposed by the Italian seismic code for existing reinforced concrete structures (OPCM 3274) is followed.

First, the assessment of the existing building is performed. Then, the verification of the retrofitting scheme (proposed by the designer who has the job of retrofitting the structure) will be checked.

In order to do this, first of all, nonlinear static analyses (static pushover analyses) are performed for every configuration using the finite element program SeismoStruct, then the results are used to make the necessary verifications of the elements of the structures following the OPCM code. Finally, the results obtained for the two studied cases are compared: it results clear that the proposed retrofitting scheme improves the behaviour of the building.
