On seismic design and advanced numerical modelling of diaphragm walls under earthquake loading

ABSTRACT

Observational evidence has shown good performance of earth retaining structures designed using simplified methods based on limit equilibrium and pseudostatic approach even though it is recognized that such methods are a crude approximations of reality neglecting important aspects such as frequency content of the input, residual displacements and shear strength degradation to name a few. Based on such observations, the aim of this work is to give example of application of pseudo-static design tools for seismic design of retaining structures according to European EC8 and the new Italian seismic code; secondly, to use advanced numerical tools to point out advantages and limitations of both methods.
