Verification of the equations for equivalent viscous damping for single degree of freedom systems

The equivalent viscous damping equation for Fat Takeda hysteretic model proposed by Priestley et al. is verified through an investigation of its application to single-degree-of freedom systems. Five different levels of ductility (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) and eight effective periods (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0) were used in combination with 26 ground-motion records. The aim is to evaluate how accurate can displacement be estimated for Fat Takeda hysteretic rule. A big scatter was observed in the results and an underestimation of displacements was inferred. This resulted in unfeasible applicability to SDOF systems of the equation.
