Description

The course will firstly introduce and compare current (force‐based) and developing (displacement‐based, or performance‐based) seismic design philosophies. Capacity design principles, necessary to ensure a satisfactory and dependable hierarchy of ductile inelastic actions will be introduced. The main part of the course will focus on the use of Direct Displacement‐Based Design to develop concept design solutions that satisfy intended performance objectives. Specific design examples related to multi‐story buildings and multi‐degree‐of freedom bridges will be considered in design projects. The content will focus principally on the DBD of Reinforced Concrete and Steel Structures, with concepts for the seismic design of masonry and timber structures introduced. The means of undertaking practical verification of design solutions using non‐linear time‐history analyses will be discussed.
