Quantitative analysis of uncertainty and risk for engineering applications. Fundamentals of prob-ability, statistics and decision analysis. Random variables, second-moment characterization, dis-tributions. Functions of random variables and propagation of uncertainty. Binomial, Poisson and asymptotic models. Introduction to statistics, Bayesian parameter estimation. Risk-based deci-sion making. Introduction to structural and system reliability. Although not required, students will benefit by reading an elementary text on probability, such as the first few chapters of the text book indicated below.
