The course will involve a detailed investigation of the seismic design and retrofit of bridges. Emphasis will be on design rather than analysis, though basic analytical tools will be discussed and used. Course syllabus wil feature: Lessons from Recent Earthquakes, Basic Design Philosophy, Conceptual Design, Moment-Curvature Analysis, Modelling Issues, Ductility Issues, Displacement-Based Design, Analysis with “Ruaumoko”, Shear strength of bridge members, Piles and Foundations, Design of Connections (joints), Continuous prestressed bridges, Assessment of Existing Bridges, Retrofit of Existing Bridges, Assessment and Retrofitting, Seismic Isolation.
