The course presents advanced dynamic analysis methods for structure and soil-structure systems subjected to earthquakes. Methods of linear and nonlinear analysis in the time-domain are covered, as is frequency domain analysis. Topics include: formulation of equations of motion, multiple-support excitation, DOF reduction methods, frequency-domain methods, soil-structure interaction methods, damping models, modal analysis and modal combination rules, time integration methods for nonlinear dynamic analysis. Applications include building analysis, torsion, bridge analysis, inelastic earthquake response, seismic isolation, effects of soil-structure interaction. Implementation of dynamic analysis methods and computing will be covered extensively (using Matlab). Modelling issues and interpretation of earthquake response are covered.
