The course will introduce and compare current (force-based) and developing (displacement-based, or performance-based) seismic design philosophies. Capacity design principles, necessary to ensure a satisfactory and dependable hierarchy of ductile inelastic actions will be introduced. Specific design examples related to multi-story buildings and multi-degree-of freedom bridges will be considered in design projects. Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of ultimate strength characteristics of reinforced concrete, fundamentals of structural dynamics of multi-degree-of-freedom systems, basic understanding of seismic response including response spectrum analyses, hysteretic damping etc.
