The seismic design of structures is currently in a transition stage from force-based to performance-based design. The most developed method of performance-based design is Direct Displacement-based Design (DDBD), where performance is related to acceptable damage, and damage to displacement. The course will introduce the fundamentals of DDBD and apply it to different structural types including frame and wall buildings, bridges and wharves. The course will be based on a new text book, by the course lecturers which will be available in time for the course. Students should have some knowledge of force-based seismic design, and a solid grounding in structural analysis and reinforced concrete design.
