Review of the physics of earthquakes, engineering seismology, and soil behaviour. Site response: general mechanisms; one-dimensional visco-elastic and equivalent-linear models; non-linear response; two- and three-dimensional effects. Walls and slopes: pseudo-static and sliding-block models. Liquefaction: laboratory and field observations; models for level-ground liquefaction; lateral spreading and settlement; liquefaction countermeasures. Response of foundations: effect of cyclic lateral loads on shallow and deep foundations; pseudo-static bearing capacity models; interaction diagram concepts for piles; response of piles in liquefied ground.
