The course is aimed at providing the students with the capability of carrying out the dynamic analysis of structural systems with special concern for the seismic response. Starting from a propedeutic introduction to basic concepts of probability theory, random processes and Monte Carlo simulations, the course describes the fundamental methods to study the dynamic response of single-degree-of-freedom, multi-degree-of-freedom and continuous systems. A general framework is given of time domain and frequency domain analyses, deterministic and random vibrations, linear and nonlinear solutions. Some examples concerning the dynamic behaviour of real structures will be presented. Seismic applications will be developed with reference to single and multi-supported structures, likewise for structures involving isolation and control strategies.
