The course focuses on classical theories of quantitative seismology. Fundamental theorems of elastodynamics and Green's functions. Asymptotic ray theory. The Eikonal equation. Generalized Snell's law. WKBJ approximations. Source representation theory. Static and dynamic dislocation models of faulting. Seismic moment tensors, finite‐source effects. Kinematics and dynamics modelling of seismic source. Sommerfeld radiation condition. Normal mode formulation. Surface Love and Rayleigh waves. Variational principles of surface waves in heterogeneous media. Group and phase velocity dispersion curves. Haskell‐Thompson propagator matrix. Lamb's problem. Full wave theory. Sharpes' solution and Sommerfeld‐Weyl integrals. Cagniard‐De Hoop solution for SH waves. Singularities, inhomogeneous waves.
