The course focuses on the application of geology to engineering seismology. The course provides basic knowledge concerning faulting and faults, landslides and surface dynamics. Segmentation models. Historical seismicity and paleo-earthquakes. Contribution of geology to seismic hazard assessment. Paleoseismology and earthquake occurrence. Recurrence times of large magnitude earthquakes and time dependent seismic hazard. Scaling relations between fault dimensions and coseismic slip. Comparison between geological estimates of slip rates and geodetic strain rates. Implications for seismic hazard assessment.
