The course will cover design and construction of precast concrete structures. Because many precast structures are also prestressed, some reference will also be made to prestressing. The course will start with an introduction to the characteristics of precast concrete, including advantages and drawbacks, production methods, typical configurations, handling methods, etc. We will then discuss principles of design for both gravity and seismic loading. The second half of the course will address specific applications to buildings and bridges. Because connections play a large role in precast concrete construction, the individual applications to buildings and bridges will emphasize connection technologies, their implementation and detailed design, and their influence on overall response.
