The course will concentrate on developing understanding of the non-linear response of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and how this influences seismic design. Methods of predicting response ranging from simple hand calculation procedures to non-linear finite element modelling will be explained. Because of the critical importance of avoiding shear failure mechanisms particular attention will be given to methods capable of evaluating the shear strength of flexural members and disturbed regions. Examples of evaluating the seismic response of complex reinforced concrete structures will be discussed. The beneficial effects of appropriate prestressing on seismic response will be highlighted.
