PROJECT MANAGEMENT

 

Objective 5: detailed development of a framework for integral planning, meaning that economic and engineering aspects are equally regarded from incipient phases of reconversion projects, namely the building survey. The concept therefore has been already developed in the dissertation of the applicant.

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH:

Setting up an example retrofit design project for the integral planning and defining the steps, from the „Functional Specifications“ over alternative generation to presentation of relevant aspects for all actors.

INSTRUMENTS:

In the project proposal an exercise with students was foreseen.

WORK PERFORMED:

Instead of an exercise with students the fellow discussed the framework with the scientist-in-charge, Dr. Rui Pinho and with Dr. Agostino Goretti from the Italian Civil Protection department in frame of the preparation of a publication for a journal. First a building was designed following the rules of the early XXth century, as buildings object of this study are. Then the retrofit method was designed using the same framework type.

RESULTS:

The design of the building has been written as an article for a peer reviewed journal and is currently in review as “European housing in reinforced concrete” (publication S3). The design of the measure, together with the integral planning framework is subject of the publication “Collaborative issues in retrofitting historical reinforced concrete buildings” (publication C8).

TRAINING RECEIVED:

The host and contacts over the host were actors in developing the framework for integral planning.

RELEVANCE:

The integral planning shows that interdisciplinarity is an accepted aspect in building engineering. But interdisciplinarity has not gained the same ground in disaster management. Therefore applying the integral planning method in seismic risk management is breaking new ground.
